Technical Directors are an integral part of the complex web of a production. In a large organization, they oversee the execution of designs, working closely with Stage Management, Production Management, Designers, Technicians, and Craftspersons. In smaller organisations they may also play one or more of those roles.
A Technical Director plays a crucial role in ensuring a show gets up and running on-time and on-budget, safely, and retaining as much of the director and designers’ vision as possible. They’re expected to be an expert in all things technical, to take the lead on safety, and to accurately evaluate designs for time and materials cost. They also need to evaluate the structural elements of set design for strength and stability, and know when and how to call in the experts. All of these responsibilities require a close working relationship with every department, and good people management skills.
TDArts was founded as the third pillar of the SMArts family. Its mission is to provide high-quality, relevant, and valuable professional development opportunities to emerging and established professional Technical Directors.
